what new cinema?
Berlin, germany’s film capital, needs a new cinema based on contemporary and new forms of film screening. The question is how a ‘new cinema’ can constitute new community of cinema-go’ers and what resulting spaces are needed: Current and (near-) future technologies plus a re-interpretation of traditional forms of cinema require new spatial organisation. Notions of communal experience, communication and interaction should be at the centre point of an alternative, future type of cinema building.
The future of film viewing may be participatory, flexible and open. The building needs to provide all of it.
volume, skin, screen
The building will provide spaces of different size and shape. Volumes of various sizes as spaces for smaller and larger audiences will be part of the program. The enclosures will require envelopes made of surfaces that provide lighting and darkening, views both in and out and become, potentially, screens for displaying media.
A strong concept of the capability of an enveloping skin will be developed on the basis of ‘structure through rhythm’, explored in terms of design and construction.
Organization, volumes and their geometry will be evaluated by both their performance as ‘new cinema’ and their architectural potential. (…)

As architects, we organise function AND we design space. Generally, the design concept considers a complex set of circumstances, such as function, urban issues (genius loci), tectonics, etc. Apart from that, and ideally, the concept also indicates poetic and intellectual qualities that might be specific to the particular design task and enhances its quality. A rigorous application of spatial design methods that are abstractly connected to the architectural design task are explored to enhance spatial potential for both interior and exterior (the interrelation of the building volumes on site).
